1955 - “Welcome Aboard” cover montage
Up until the early 1970s, airlines such as American distributed flight information kits to passengers. These kits were replaced as in-flight magazines came online. These kits featured items such as post cards, puzzles, route maps, general information, drink tickets, and destination information. Some even featured foreign language translators and cards.

1959 - “Time” Magazine Cover Story on C.R. Smith
American’s legendary chairman, C.R. Smith, and his trendsetting airline was the cover story of this November 1958 issue of “Time”. Less than 2 months later in January 1959, American would be the first airline to fly jets domestically in permanent service. George Baker’s National would beat Smith to the punch in December 1958 with leased Pan Am 707’s serving Miami to Idelwild.

1960 - “Welcome Aboard” Passenger Kit
Up until the early 1970s, airlines such as American distributed flight information kits to passengers. These kits were replaced as in-flight magazines came online. These kits featured items such as post cards, puzzles, route maps, general information, drink tickets, and destination information. Some even featured foreign language translators and cards. This kit places special emphasis on the new jet service complete with descriptions on how jets fly, sound, and feel. Also a hoot is the somewhat sexist stewardess description.

1960 - Post Card Scrapbook
With the jet age in full swing, American distributed these scrap books to passengers. This example features the 707, Electra, and a preview of the coming 727, along with past examples from the fleet.
