1990 Fast Facts
Cathay's world map is shown to great effect here. At this time, San Francisco was the sole U.S. gateway. The 747s at the time didn't have the range to fly non-stop from LAX or SFO to Hong Kong, requiring a stopover in Vancouver.

1990 Seating Chart
As of 1990, the fleet consisted of the full range of 747s and the Lockheed L1011.

1990 LAX to Hong Kong brochure
With the arrival of the long range 747-400s, Cathay switched their long haul US gateway from San Francisco to Los Angeles with nonstop service to Hong Kong.
