Ansett in Australia
A trio of 737-300s of now defunct Ansett Austrailian Airlines during turnaround on the ramp at Adelaide. Ansett went bankrupt in 2001.

QANTAS BAC-146-300
2 shots of the original modern RJ, the BAC-146-300, boarding at Adelaide, Australia. The 146’s were re-introduced and re-configured as AVRO RJ’s which were a commercial failure in the face of the Canadair and Embriaer RJ’s. The thirst and relative high maintenance of the model did not help, but from a passenger’s perspective this plane is a joy.
Double Dash’s
2 Dash 8-100’s belonging to Qantas regional affiliate, Eastern Australian Express at Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport.

Flight West
Flight West’s F28-1000’s were grounded when the airline went bankrupt shortly after this picture was taken in December 1999 in Cairns, Queensland.
Alice Springs
The Alice Springs Airport in the Outback sports a modern international look.

747-400 cockpit
Cathay Pacific graciously gave me permission to ride along in the 747-400 cockpit from LAX to Hong Kong CLK back in December 1999. Sadly, those days have passed. These shots reveal the all glass EFIS cockpit midway over the Pacific.

QANTAS BAC-146-300
In the days when cockpit visits abroad were permitted, I flew a Qantas BA-146-300 from Adelaide to Alice Springs in the Australian Outback. Note the 4 engine EPR instruments in the center of the instrument panel of this powerful RJ. The power plants are capable of 7,000 pounds of thrust per engine. They are pictured over the Outback.

Qantas 747-200
As a leisure market, Cairns Airport is a haven for 747-200s heading for Japan and other points in Asia. Very few 747-400’s arrive here due to it’s tourist traffic.
Qantas 747-SP
This 747 SP “Sutter’s Balloon” was in it’s final days in service with Qantas when this image was taken in December 1999. This flight was departing for Nagoya in Japan. Qantas and South African were the last front line operators of this long-range variant, with Qantas 2 examples gone by 2001. Besides the range and 50,000 foot altitude capabilities, the SP claims the amazing feat of never suffering an accident.
