Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport

Opening in 1969, Bush Intercontinental is the main airport for the city despite it's far flung location. IAH is the hub airport and home base for Continental Airlines which dominates operations there with over 700 daily departures. Surprisingly, Southwest serves both Hobby and Intercontinental from Love Field. Hobby has expanded from 2 terminals at it's opening to 5 separate terminals linked above and below ground by train and a very unuusal mini-tram. Like Hobby, IAH is in a costant state of rebuild with a new international terminal and ticket hall which opened in 2004. IAH is served by a broad list of foreign airlines including KLM, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, Taca, British Airways, AeroMexico, Air Canada, Cayman, and Aviasca Venezuela. Some interesting facts from IAH: it currently ranks 3rd in the United States among U.S. airports with scheduled non-stop domestic and international service (over 181 destinations). IAH is the 9th busiest airport in the U.S. for total passengers. It was renamed George Bush Intercontinental Airport in 1997, in honor of President George H. Bush.

Terminal A

Continental dominates the scene at IAH. Consequently, most other domestic carriers operate out of Terminal A, one of the original 1969 terminals.

Terminal B Continental Express Ramp

The sizeable Continental Express hub is located at Terminal B. With the opening of Terminal E, Express replaced mainline CO operations at terminal B.

Terminal B Ticketing Hall

Terminal B (along with Terminal A) were the original terminals at IAH's 1969 opening. Continental, IAH's hometown and hub carrier, dominates this terminal. In 2004, mainline operations at Terminal B moved to the new Terminal E, and B became CO Express' hub.

Micky Leland International Terminal D

IAH's international carriers: KLM, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, Taca, British Airways, AeroMexico, Air Canada, Cayman, and Aviasca Venezuela, call Terminal D home. Leland International Terminal opened in 1990.

Terminal E

Terminal E is the newest at IAH. Continental is the sole carrier in this spacious and attractive new facility.

Underground Tram

IAH boasts an unusual subterranean tram underneath Terminals A & B. This electric tram connects the terminal with the Marriott Hotel. Unusually, it runs alongside an underground walkway. Each car accomodates 4 people and is an open configuration. It is an oddly clunking vehicle which has the sensation of a child's amusement park ride. The modern, above ground train has diminshed the utility of this unique conveyance.

Marriott Hotel Revolving Restaurant

This revolving restaurant is a landmark, and affords excellent views of the ramp.

Continental Airlines Boeing 737-500, 757-300, and ERJs

Continental ERJs and Northwest CRJ-200

CO and Northwest are code share partners on a number of routes. At one time, NW had a financial share in CO and they often been mooted as rumor partners. Ironic in all this as CO has the best labor relations and cabin service of any U.S. domestic carrier while NW's, at the other extreme, are among the worst.

IAH Cargo Ramp and Anotov-124s

IAH's position as a vital oil and energy center makes the AN-124 a regular visitor for shipment of drilling supplies.

Runway "Under Construction" Marker

This marker is designed to warn aircraft to avoid runways under construction. The Singapore Airlines 2000 crash at Taipei when the aircraft crew attempted a take-off on such a runway is the most notable example of this kind of accident.
