Houston
William P. Hobby Airport
Hobby was Houston's main airport
until the opening of Intercontinental Airport in 1969. Like Dallas Love,
most airlines relocated to the new airport in spite of the new airports
far afield location. Southwest was one of the few carriers to serve Hobby
when it launched in 1971, with Hobby's close-in location making it much
more convenient to most of the city than IAH. Now, American, Continental,
Air Tran and Delta offer limited service to their hub cities, but Southwest
continues to dominate the traffic. Hobby is in the midst of an extensive
rebuild with a new ticketing hall and concourses opening. Old concourses
such as the cramped Terminal A are B are due to be torn down once the
new C is in full operation. The old ticket hall has been merged into the
new one in a creative fashion until it too is razed in the future.

Houston George
Bush Intercontinental Airport
Opening in 1969, Bush Intercontinental
is the main airport for the city despite it's far flung location. IAH
is the hub airport and home base for Continental Airlines which dominates
operations there. Surprisingly, Southwest serves both Hobby and Intercontinental
from Love Field. Like Hobby, IAH is in a costant state of rebuild with
a new international terminal and ticket hall opening soon. |
