New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport

New Orleans Louis Armstrong International terminal has a mix of old and new, including a Quonset hut looking arrivals hall. In the check-in area is a vintage “Ionosphere Room” sign and ticket counter belonging to the long defunct Eastern Airlines. In 1998, a new concourse and ticketing area was added. In 2000, Moisant was renamed Louis Armstrong International after the famous Jazz musican native. Though, the MSY code still remains. At one time, it boasted extensive service as Delta's hub to the Carribean and Latin American, and featured one-stop service to London. In the 1970s, widebody National Douglas DC-10s were frequent visitors to MSY.

The airport was quite damaged during Katrina. It became a vital link for the area during this catastrophe: a staging area, morgue, and triage unit . MSY service is about 1/3rd what it was pre-Katrina. Most airlines have returned but frequencies and non-stop destinations beyond the hubs have been scaled way back.
