Oakland
International Airport
Oakland International
Airport is one of three airports serving the Bay Area. For years, it was
a second tier charter airport but with the high landing fees of SFO and
the arrival of Southwest it has become a first tier facility. Oakland
does tend to have fewer fog delays than SFO. All the majors serve Oakland
as do niche carriers such as Aloha. Southwest occupies most of Terminal
2 which will be renovated, after the T1 expansion is complete. Terminal
1 is the home of all other carriers. Oasis Hong Kong began the airport's
first regularly scheduled Asian service by June, 2007. OAK is most famous
as the original headquarters of World Airways.

Aloha is a commanding
presence with numerous flights to Honolulu, Kona, Maui, and Las Vegas. Aloha
operates some of the the world's longest long-haul flights over open water
using the 737. This is thanks to ETOPs, but would've been unthinkable just
a few years ago. |

ATA

OAK, along with
Chicago Midway, is a key city for ATA. The LCC code-shares to Hawaii and
other destinations with Southwest. ATA provides a similar Hawaii code-share
to and from Phoenix, Las Vegas, LAX, and Ontario. ATA contracts out with
Southwest for ground ops at these airports. ATA is discontinuing flights
in very competitive markets like New York Laguardia and Midway in favor
of further Hawaii expansion.ATA also operates 757-200s and 757-300s. Millitary
charters still utilize ATA's L1011-500s and DC-10-30s. |
