John Wayne
Airport - Orange County,
CA
John Wayne Airport is a unique airport is located about 25 miles south of
LAX, and 12 miles south of Long Beach. This OC airport is unique for having
one of the shortest runways regularly serving large jet aircraft. At just
over 5500 feet, it handles aircraft as large as a Boeing 757, but the single
runway takes special training to operate into. John Wayne's noise abatement
procedures keep slot limits tight and most low cost carriers out, the exception
being Southwest. Unlike Long Beach, its catchment area is basically limited
to the close-in surrounding communities. Orange County and extreme southern
LA county. It is served by Aloha, American West, American, Delta, Alaska,
and United using mainline and regional equipment. The main terminal is a
clean, simple affair, rebuilt in 1994. Until 1985, Orange County was the
home-base of AirCal before it was taken over by American Airlines. |
