Philadelphia
International Airport
PHL is one of the busiest airports on the Eastern Seabord and is now the
site of a major battle with ramifications for the entire industry. For years,
USAirways has been the dominant carrier with PHL being its #1 domestic and
international hub. There had been very little LCC operations into here,
with the exception of AirTran. In June, 2004 Southwest commenced service
into PHL, overlapping on many of US Airways routes including transcons as
of August, 2004. The battle for the "City of Brotherly LUV" between
new LCC US Airways and Southwest is underway. In Baltimore, Southwest pretty
much destroyed the USAirways hub there, causing it to scale back the hub
there. The CEO of USAirways upon hearing Southwest arriving in Philadelphia
remarked "They are out to kill us". At the same time, USAirways
and international operation moved into the cutting edge new Terminal A West.
With the 2006 merger of US and
America West, US Airways' fortunes have improved considerably. PHL is a
6 terminal-configuration: A West, A East, B, C, D, E & F. Philly is
noterworthy for a U.S. Airport in having an extra rail link from the city
directly into the terminal via SEPTA. |

A West Terminal
The striking, spacious 2004 circa terminal is home to PHL's international
airlines (British, Air Jamaica, Air France, and Lufthansa), U.S. Airways'
international flights, and Frontier. At one time, TWA, Pan Am, and American
had extensive international flights into PHL, but those have been replaced
by international airlines and U.S. Airways which hubs its European and Carribbean
flights here. |

Airport Train Station
SEPTA operates an excellent and quick link from downtown Philadelphia to
PHL. A direct, efficient rail link is a rarity for U.S. Airports with Chicago,
Atlanta, and Washington National boasting similar services. |
