Flight
Safety International Simulators - Atlanta, GA
CRJ-200/900, Citation II, ATR-42/72
Boeing's Flight Safety International
operates a flight training center at Atlanta Airport. The facility attracts
pilots from all over the world, but Delta owned express carrier, ASA is
the major customer. ASA even locates its owned simulators there. The simulators
are booked 24/7 for training and check rides. As any pilot will tell you,
the lifelike simulators are incredible tools that simulate things that
you could never do, or never want to encoutner, in a commercial aircraft.
They are so effective that new pilots go straight from here to flying
the line with passengers without ever training in a real jet. Note: when
the bridges are up, the simulators are in use. At 12-20 million dollars,
these sims can actually cost more than the real aircraft.
Special Thanks to: Van
Richardson for the tour

DASH 8 Sim
Even the DASH 8 simulator was
busy during my visit there as obscure an aircraft as it is becoming.

 |
CRJ-200/900 Sim
ASA and Comair are the world's
largest CRJ operators. Consequently, these sims are the busiest in the
facility.

LearJet 25 Sim
I had the opportunity to experience
this sim first hand. Flight Safety International services commercial as
well as executive pilots

LearJet 25 Sim Flight
Deck
The flight deck is virtually
indestinguishable from the real thing, save for the instructors station
to the rear. The movement, sounds, and visuals are extremely rear. Outside
the flight deck is a panoramic projection screen that even for late 80s
technology provides amazing realism, though not as much visual FX as many
of today's PC based sims.

LearJet 25 Simulator
Instructor Station
From this station, the instructor
can run many nightmarish scenarios that would rarely, if ever be encountered
in the real world. Virtually any major airport in the world is included
in the software.

CRJ-200 Training
Fuselage Flight Deck
This flight deck is not a simulator,
and therefore features only decals where instruments and controls would
normally be.
|
 |
CRJ-200 Training Fuselage
Cabin
This fuselage came from an
actual CRJ that was written off in an accident.
|
 |
CRJ-200 and Brasillia
Training Fuselages
Both of these came from actual
aircraft. Brasilla operations for ASA ended in 2003 or 2004.

LAX Simulator Screens
from LearJet Sim
As noted above, the 80s vintage
Lear sims lack some of the GFX special effects effects of some consumer
PC based systems, but are plenty real for the job.
