Buenos
Aires International Airport (Ezeiza) - Terminal B (2001)
Ministro Pistarini
International Airport is the Argentina's largest international airport.
It is more commonly known as Ezeiza Airport because it is located in the
locality of Ezeiza in Buenos Aires province, about 18 miles from downtown
Buenos Aires city. This old terminal is also the hub of international routes
of Aerolíneas Argentinas. These photos were taken in December 2001
when I was in Buenos Aires during the uprising, resulting from the 2001-02
Financial Crisis. Our flight was one of the few to leave that day. |

Sao
Paulo Congonhas Airport (2001)
Congonhas is Brasil's
busiest airport. Much like New York's Laguardia, it is close-in to town,
caters primarily to short haul traffic, and is often chaotic. In fact, I
have never been in a more congested, chaotic facility. Tam and Gol dominate
here. |

Sao Paulo Guarulhos
International Airport (2001)
Guarulhos International
Airport is São Paulo, Brazil's international airport, and Brazil's
second busiest airport. It is located in Guarulhos municipality, 22 km northeast
of the São Paulo city centre. It's 2 crowded terminals are expected
to be aided by the construction of a third which began in 2006. |

United Airlines Boeing
777-200 (2001)
I flew on this
Triple 7 to Miami back in the days when United's Latin American services
hubbed at MIA. Today UA doesn't even serve South Florida with mainline service.
Latin hub ops have shifted to hubs in Chicago and Washington Dulles. I miss
United giving American a little run for their money. |

Tam Fokker F-100 and
Varig MD-11 at Sao Paulo Guarulhos International Airport (2001)
A tale of two
tails, one soaring to success, one crashing to the ground. Varig, once Brazil's
premiere airline succommed in the Summer of 2006, and reorganized as a much
smaller carrier. The much younger TAM flew on to great heights growing in
10 years from a small local carrier to a high quality one with international
service. It was considered a phenomena in Brazil but has been underfire
from LCC Gol. Personally, I found Tam to be one of the highest quality airlines
I have ever flown. |

Rio de Janeiro Paulo
Galeão International Airport (2001)
Galeão
- Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport is Rio de Janeiro's
major international airport. The airport was named after the late Brazilian
musician Antônio Carlos Jobim. Up until 1985, it was Brazil's primary
international airport until Guarulhos in Sao Paulo took those honors.
Many international services still require connections through Sao Paulo. |

TransBrasil Maintenance
- Brasilia (2001)
Trans Brasil
was once Brazil's second largest domestic carrier, behind VASP. Under
economic stress from competition from TAM and the weakening Brazilian
economy, it shut down in early 2001. |

VASP Airlines Boeing
737-200 - Brasilia (2001)
VASP was Brazil's
largest domestic airline and a regional powerhouse owning airlines in Paraguay
and Bolivia. After it was privatized, It grew to add international services
to Miami and Europe. This over-expansion and new competition eventually
led to VASP selling off LAB and LAP, and then discontinuing international
services. Under threat from GOL, it never recovered, going bankrupt in 2005.
There are rumors it will fly again in 2007. I flew VASP in 2001, the same
day I flew a TAM flight. The differences were startling. Tam flew brand
new Airbus A-320s with the best domestic economy service I have ever experienced.
Stepping on to the ancient VASP 737-200 was an adventure, but in flight
service was poor and the equipment was shabby. I'll always remember it as
the scariest flight ever as the creeky, ancient Boeing encountered severe
turbulence en route to Amazon in a thunderstorm. My seatmate scratched gashes
in my arm, she was so terrified. |
