Air Do - July/August 2004
This isn't Air D'oh! - Homer Simpson's Airline. Air Do is based on the frigid, northernmost island of Japan, Hokkaido. The airline serves regional Asian destinations from its Sapporo base.
Air India - November 1966
Air India's mascot, the Maharaja, is a turban clad king with over-sized moustache and a royal dress. "He may look like royalty, but he isn't royal" - these are the words of Bobby Kooka, the man who conceived the Maharajah. This figure first made his appearance in Air-India way back in 1946, when Bobby Kooka as Air-India's Commercial Director and Umesh Rao, an artist with J.Walter Thompson Ltd., Mumbai, together created the Maharajah. Air India, originally known as Tata Airlines, was founded in 1932. It became the world's first all-jet airline in 1962. It's hub and headquarters are at Mumbai (Bombay).
Air India - April 2003
Currently Air India operates an all wide-body fleet of Boeing 747-200s, 300s, and 400s as well as numerous Airbus A-310s for regional Indian Subcontinent services. While Indian Airlines focuses on domestic and regional routes, Air India concentrates on long haul international services. The airline introduced a new updated modern livery in 1989 replacing the 1960s era "Flying Palace" image, but an uproar caused the new image to revert back to the "Palace" look.
All Nippon Airways - Oct. 31, 1999
ANA, formerly known as All Nippon Airways, is one of the top 10 airlines in the world. ANA dominates the Japanese domestic market and in terms of passenger volume is the largest carrier in the country. ANA began its first international services in 1986 to Guam. Since then it has become a major player in the international market with flights to Europe, the rest of Asia, North America, and Australia. ANA, along with JAL, operates the Domestic version of the 747 for high-density flying of over 500 passengers on very short haul flights within Japan. ANA is a member of the Star Alliance.

CAAC - 1980
CAAC is a cross between the FAA in the U.S. and Aeroflot in Russia as it governs all civilian aviation and at one time was an airline. CAAC was renamed Air China in 1988 as the international division of the airline. It was the first Communist airline to equip itself with western aircraft, introducing 707's back in the mid 70's.

  Cathay Pacific - 1961

In short order, it was purchased by the Swire Group where it remained wholly British owned until prior to the handover of the colony to mainland China. Cathay has always been one of Asia's most progressive carriers, from pioneering L1011 and Convair 880 flights in Asia to being the launch customer for the Boeing 777-300. It has consistently been profitable thawrted only by the SARS epidemic in 2003.

Cathay Pacific - 1990
This timetable heralded the switch of transpacific services from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

In 1999, Cathay joined the One World alliance.

China Airlines - 1992
China Airlines was founded in 1959 to provide air service for Taiwan. China Airlines has been successful from a financial standpoint, but has suffered one of the world's worst safety records in spite of operating a modern fleet of 747-400's, MD-11, and A-340's.

China, having improved its safety record and level of surface, rejoined the SkyTeam alliance.

Dragonair - 1997
Hong Kong based Dragonair began in the early 90s to serve predominantly mainland China destinations from Hong Kong not served by then British-owned Cathay, along with other secondary routes. Cathay is a major shareholder in the airline. Since the 1997 Handover of Hong Kong to China, Dragonair has become a huge success story, becoming even more profitable than big brother/competitor Cathay. Dragonair operates an all Airbus fleet with 320s and 330s.
  Everest Air (Nepal) - 1996
Everest is one of the many small commuter operators serving the Kingdom of Nepal. Everest also flies sightseeing flights to Mount Everest.
  Japan Asia Airways - 1997
JAA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Air Lines (JAL). JAA principally serves Taipei from Japan. Many airlines are forced to set-up separate subsidiaries to serve Taiwan due to mainland China not allowing airlines to serve both Taiwan and China.

Japan Airlines - October 1968
JAL was becoming a world-class airline from its base at Tokyo Haneda Airport. This schedule shows "The Great Circle" route flown over the Arctic with DC-8s. The timetable also shows Convair 880s on regional Asian flights.

Japan Air Lines (JAL) - 1987
Founded in 1951, government owned JAL is Japan's largest international carrier. As one of the world's largest international airlines, JAL operates the world's largest fleet of Boeing 747's. JAL is also unique in that it is not a member of an international alliance such as Star or One World, and that is totally Boeing loyal operating only Boeing equipment. JAL, along with ANA, operates the Domestic version of the 747 for high-density flying of over 500 passengers on very short haul flights within Japan.
Japan Air Lines (JAL) - 1996
The 1992 redesign is shown in this schedule. By 1996, JAL continued to perfrom well but was facing mounting competition on high revenue international routes from ANA.

JAS (Japan Air System) - 1993
JAS was Japan's 3rd airline until 2002 when it was taken over by JAL. JAS was predominantly a leisure brand.

KAL was high-flying in 1981 with ultra-long range services using the Boeing 747SP pictured on the cover of the timetable.

  Korean Air - 1992
Korean Airlines was founded in 1962 succeeding an earlier carrier, Korean National Airlines. Owned majority control by the Hanjin family, the airline has suffered from a horrendous safety record over the last decaded and increased competition from successful Asiana.
Korean Air - 1996
1996 was a nadir of Korean but by 2000, things had improved markedly with a return to the Skyteam Alliance.

Korean Air - October 2004
2004 saw a much improved Korean Air, centered around the breathtaking new Seoul Inchion International Airport. With this facility, Korean is now marketing itself as Cathay and Singapore do: a Pan-Asian airline.

Malaysian Air - 1992
Malaysian Air was founded as MAS in 1971 when Malaysia-Singapore Airlines was split into 2 carriers by their respective governments. Malaysian operates an enviable service from Kuala Lumpur internationally and domestically. Due to the economic turn down in Asia and the new KLIA Airport, many airlines have deserted Kuala Lumpur leaving the bulk of flights to Malaysian.
Nepal Airways - 1996
Nepal Airways is flies vintage HS748s on flights around the Kingdom.
Philippine International Airlines - 2004
Philippine International's fortunes were improving in 2004, following the SARS outbreaks of 2003. Philippine was originally founded by Pan Am in the post WWII years.
Royal Nepal Airlines - 1996
RNA was founded in the late 1950s with assistance from Indian Airlines. Its flagship aircraft are 2 Boeing 757-200s Combis, replacing 727-100s from 1987. These 757s are the only 757 Combis ever delivered new from Boeing.
  Singapore Airlines - 1981
Singapore Airlines was founded in 1971 when Malaysia-Singapore Airlines was split into 2 carriers by their respective governments. Singapore is famous for its in-flight service, represented on the cover by the renowned "Singapore Girl". SAA has been a consistent winner as a launch customer for the A-380, award after award for its service, taking a 49% stake in Virgin, and consistent profitability. Recently it has suffered from the SARS outbreak as well as the crash of one of its 747-400 Megatops. Star is a member of the Star Alliance.
Singapore Airlines - 1983
Singapore temporarily replaced its Singapore Girl from the cover with the Boeing 747-300 "Megatop". SIA launched the extended upper deck aircraft in 1983. Not to be confused with the 747-400, the 300 was basically a -200 with the upper deck stretch and slightly uprated engines. It was a stopgap measure until the 1989 arrival of the 747-400.
Singapore Airlines - 2004
Singapore in 2004 continued to be a world leader in many respects: The inflight service is considered one of the very best, if not the best in the world. In 2004, Singapore became the launch customer for the Airbus A340-500 Leadership which launched the world's longest nonstop flights: Newark-Singapore and LAX to Singapore. Images of the A340-500 at Newark can be seen on the Newark page. In 2006, Singapore is scheduled to become the world's first operator of the Airbus A380 SuperJumbo.
Thai Airways - 1999
Thai Airways was founded in 1959 as the state airline of Thailand. From its Bangkok base, Thai operates an excellent service to Europe, North America, throughout Asia, and Australia. It is currently one of the last front line operators of the MD-11.
