Air Canada - April 26, 1981
Air Canada was founded as Trans Canadian Airlines in 1938. For years it was the flagship carrier with an excellent reputation for service and safety. The airline initially did well after privatization but then things began to go downhill. In 2000, it bought out its major competitor Candian in a disastorous merger. Despite innovative iniatives Jazz, Tango, and Zip; and a virtual monopoly on long haul flights, AC is having its lunch eaten by low cost carriers and severe labor strife. The airline has recovered from bankruptcy in a situation largely caused by its own making. Air Canada is a Star Alliance member.

Air Canada - 1998

Air Canada was a charter member of the Star Alliance, but would switch to the American Airlines allied One World Alliance. Two years later Air Canada would swallow its main competitor, Canadian which became an infamous example of disasterous mergers. Beyond that, a confluence of factors: the worldwide downturn in air travel, a 2001-02 recession, LCC competition (WestJet), and over expansion caused AC to enter bankruptcy. It almost joined Sabena and Swissair as a flag carriers that became extinct. In 2004, The airline made a stunning turnaround by morphing into a much more efficent low cost carrier/premium service hybrid.

Air Transat - Summer, 1997
Montreal based Air Transat began as a charter carrier in 1987 and quickly become part of the Canadian scheduled airline mainstream. Initially flying L1011s long-haul, it is now a large Airbus A330 operator. One of its A330s, flight 236, had the misfortune of running out of fuel and barely landing safely in the Azores Islands. Despite this mishap, Air Transat is one of the few to survive the turbulent 1990s.
