In 1973 Frontier had sold off it’s fleet of 727-100s and 200s in favor of 737-200s. The balance of the fleet was comprised of Convair 580s. The airline hired the first female pilot for a major airline in the year. Profits were strong as Frontier reached it’s ultimate financial health. Note the presence of numerous subsidized routes to small towns such as Ponca City, Oklahoma and Hays, Kansas.

2 years before deregulation began, Frontier began making plans to spread it’s wing west to California and east to Atlanta. In 1974, Frontier became an international airline with flights to Winnipeg.

1979 was the final prosperous year for Frontier. It was the 2nd largest operator in the world of the 737s. 1979 saw Frontier enter the Mexican market as well as Vancouver. The new livery, designed by Sal Bass, was introduced a year earlier in April, 1978. The route map shows the Convair fleet being phased out.

By 1982, Frontier had trimmed away many of its subsidized local routes as the Convair 580s were retired. The airline continued its expansion into Southern California, having just entered the state in 1978.

This schedule features the routes of the very short lived Frontier Horizon Airlines. This snakebit carrier was sued by Horizon Airlines of Washington and lost, neccessitating a name change which never happened before this subsidiary was shut down. Horizon operated a high end, long haul albeit low cost, non-union service out of Denver using non fleet compatible 727s.
November 1, 1985
At this time Frontier was a year away from its demise in August, 1986. Frontier was acquired by People Express. The merger was ill-fated as People’s fortunes crumbled. Frontier’s high-cost high end structure was not compatible with People’s low cost limited service approach. The Convairs were gone by 1982, leaving Frontier mainline with an all-jet fleet. The 737’s had been joined by MD-80’s. By 1985, schedules had been curtailed with Atlanta, Detroit, and all Mexican routes abandoned.

Frontier II was formed in 1994 at Denver providing a high quality low cost service. The initial fleet of 737-200s gave way to 737-300s and finally Airbus A-319s. The tails of the fleet were decorated with wildlife images of the west. Frontier fought off the threat from Western Pacific at Denver and Colorado Springs, and has gone on to be prosperous even during the current crisis.

By 2000, Frontier’s wings spread to all 4 corners of the United States with its fleet of A-319s and 737s. In 2002, Frontier signed an agreement with Airbus to be its exclusive supplier for the next 20 years. Frontier also launched Live TV service.
