September 4, 1968
2 years earlier in 1966, Hawaiian introduced the first intra-island jet service with the DC-9-10. In November 1968, the first 2 DC-9-30s arrived at Honolulu.
February 15, 1972
In 1972, Hawaiian introduced all cargo Quick Change DC-9 flights. The next year would herald the introduction of the new “Pualani” image.

IHawaiian was the first jet operator in Hawaii, launching service with DC-9 series 10s. These would be superceeded by DC-9 series 50s in 1975, and Boeing 717s in 1998.
January 31, 1980
By 1980, Hawaiian was flying an all DC-9-30 and DC-9-50 fleet.The next year Dash-7’s and MD-80’s would be introduced. In 1980, Hawaiian was awarded flights to the U.S. mainland but wouldn’t activate them until 1985 with leased Lockheed L-1011s.

January 15, 1985
Hawaiian introduced stateside service with Tristars later in the year to resounding success. In the meantime, the DC-9-50’s and Dash 7’s dominated Aloha on the intra-island front.
April 3, 1988
Hawaiian’s service to the mainland U.S., launched in 1985, had proven so successful that services were extended to Vegas, Alaska, Portland, and Vancouver by 1988. Also, destinations now stretched to Australia, New Zealand, and Guam. DC-8’s also continued to serve the South Pacific destinations.
June 1, 1993
A crumbling economy and Hurricane Iniki hurt Hawaiian in 1992-93. The airline lost a devastating $111 million alone. Australia and Micronesia services were discontinued, along with the retirement of the DC-8’s. On a positive note, in 1994 DC-10s leased from American began to replace the Tristars.
July 1, 2002
Hawaiian was replacing it’s leased American DC-10s with Boeing 767’s in 2002. Boeing 717’s came into the fleet beginning in 2000 replacing the DC-9-50’s which first joined in 1975. The beautiful, new “Pualani” image was introduced with arrival of the 717s. Schedules extended to Japan, Australia, and New Zealand at this point.
