Jet Blue is the most successful, heavily capitalized airline start-up in
history, even more impressive considering the extreme environment pervasive
in the industry. Even more impressive, Jet Blue created an original concepts
for travel with improved service rather than cutbacks. Live DirecTv (owned
by the airline), wide leather seats, brand new airplanes, innovative catering,
high-end service, and a number of technological innovations separate this
airline from the pack. Jet Blue also innovated successful coast to coast
long haul service in the LCC segment. The carrier launched with 3 A-320s
in February, 2000 with flights to Florida, JFK, and New York state. Their
route map now stretches to all 4 corners of the U.S. and to Puerto Rico
and the Dominican Republic. Focus airports are New York's JFK and Long Beach
(Los Angeles). The founder of the airline, David Neelman, is a bonafide
genius and is the subject of a new book "Flying High", a must
read! |

JetBlue, the industry's miracle child continuted to grow even after the
horrific events of 9/11. A very successful service was launched to San
Juan, service expanded at Long Beach and Washington Dulles.

Jet Blue goes from strength to strength. It made news again in 2003 when
it became the first low cost carrier to order new Regional Jet's, ordering
a new line of E Jets, the ERJ-190s. With these, Jet Blue expects to become
the first successfull LCC operator of Regional Jets using these 90-100
seat planes. They actually have wider seats than the A-320.
Reportedly, Richard Branson
considered investing inJet Blue prior to launch, but regulatory and control
issues thwarted the talks. He calls Jet Blue "The One That Got Away".
In 2004, Branson announced plans to launch a US based LCC based in New
York, but with service focused around San Francisco. |

Route Map
This route map shows a robust network with new service to the Dominican
Republic. This map was taken from the website as the airline no longer publishes
a printed schedule. In 2003, Jet Blue began and discontinued service to
Atlanta. This may be seen as a failure but in fact it shows how quickly
the company can experiment and respond to market conditions, but not be
bogged down in loss making operations. Jet Blue, so far the industry darling,
continues to be a raging success but competitors from Virgin, Independence
Air, and the incumbent Southwest stand poised to challenge its growth. |
