1966 - Trans Texas Air ticket jacket
September 1967
TI was known as Trans Texas at the time. It operated a fleet of DC-9s, DC-3s and Convair 600s. The “Pamper Jets” flew west to New Mexico, east to Memphis, and south to the Rio Grande Valley. The airline was affectionatly known as "Tree Top Airways".
January 1972
Trans Texas became Texas International Airlines in 1971-72 as new international services to Mexico were added.
February 2, 1975
TI suffered a debilitating strike in 1974-75. During that time, it introduced a new color scheme but bookings were slow in coming even after services restarted. TI operated DC-9’s and Convair 600’s into the smaller destinations like Brownwood, TX. Los Angeles and Salt Lake City were relatively recent introductions to the route map.
Summer 1977
Frank Lorenzo was hailed as a wunderkind when at 34 years old, he took over Texas International Airlines. His Peanuts fares were revolutionary in an industry of high fares. After recent damaging strikes, TI was desperate to attract passengers. Under Lorenzo, TI cut service to unprofitable subsidized cities and the Convair 600s.
July 15, 1981
Under Lorenzo, TI was on a tear in 1981. It had aggressively bid on National Airlines and now had Continental in its sights. A year later, Lorenzo’s Texas International would swallow the much larger Continental to disastrous results. See the Continental site for further details. The route map in 1981 had expanded to New England, Minneapolis, and Mexico.

June 1, 1982
Parent Corporation merged Texas International and Continental on June 1, 1982. This was just Frank Lorenzo’s first disastrous example of 1 + 1 does not equal 2. A little over a year later, Continental would be in bankruptcy for the first time. At the time of the merger, Continental served Micronesia, Hawaii, Mexico, the South Pacific, and domestic destinations from the Denver and Houston hubs. At this time, Newark and Cleveland were still years from being hubs.
