Evergreen
Air Center, Marana, Arizona
Located between Tucson and Phoenix Arizona, the Evergreen Air Center
is the derelict plane spotter’s Mecca. Unfortunately, no tours are
offered and security is tight. These images were taken in Summer, 1996 when
rare ramp access was given to this private airfield. Tours and photography
are now basically off limits, but if you are interested in purchasing parts
or cannibalized fuselages contact AVTEL in Mojave, CA at 661-824-4517 or
Evergreen Air Center at Pinal Park in Marana, AZ at 520-682-4181. Fuselages
hulls are sold for scrap value in the 15K to 25K range. |

Evergreen 747
The Evergreen 747 was undergoing conversion to freighter configuration

Trans Aero
In Summer, 1996 Moscow based Trans Aero was prospering with far
flung international services. They operated 3 ex-American DC-10-30s which
were undergoing conversion here. By 2001, Trans Aero had contracted to regional
European services and had divested of it’s widebody fleet. |

Air
Lingus 747’s
In the mid-90’s, Air Lingus replaced it’s 2 747-100’s
with A330’s for it’s North Atlantic routes. They were awaiting
their next mission in Marana in July, 1996. |

NASA
747
In the mid-70’s American Airlines phased out its 747-123
services in favor of the DC-10. In 1974, N9668 was sold to NASA initially
for use as a SCA (Shuttle Carrier Aircraft). It was used to test the Space
Shuttle Enterprise prototype in gliding flight and then to transport the
orbiters from Edwards AFB to Cape Kennedy. American briefly operated 747s
again in SP form for Asian routes in the late 80’s and early 90’s
before the MD-11 was delivered. NASA acquired N747BL from JAL in 1988
bringing the fleet to two. This example was undergoing maintenance at
Evergreen in July, 1996.
